Oh Identity...

Here is an article that I read today that I found rather distressing.

It's sad to see lives taken because their identity or self-worth is in something other than God.  The article shares about the most recent football player who committed suicide after scarcely playing due to a knee injury.

A quote from this article, So much of what we try to do is about developing an identity outside of being a football player,” said Williams, who sought counseling during his rookie season with the New Orleans Saints. “If your identity [is] wrapped up in you being a football player and you’re in a sport where so many guys are replaceable, what’s going to happen when you don’t have football?”

Another quote from this article says, “You’re talking about people who are told that they can overcome anything, do anything, if they work at it,” said Pittman, whose partner, Craig Domann, represented Underwood. “It’s not just in athletes. You see the same thing in lots of people: doctors, lawyers, bankers. Athletes think they’re stronger than anyone else. Doctors think they’re smarter.”

May we not find our identity in our performances, job, people, status or money.  May we be humble in order to seek help when needed.  May we love others and share Christ with them so that they may have hope and a purpose for living!  Only He will fulfill and satisfy us.  Only in Him will we find our true identity.
